Syncopation:
A Harlem Renaissance Anthology
Anthology compiled by CSU,Chico Students
We are a group of students attending California State University Chico. While studying the written culture of the Harlem Renaissance in Dr. Tracy Butt's graduate seminar in Spring of 2014, we were inspired to create our own anthology marrying the digital world with literary culture. With this site we have sought to reimagine the categorization of classic anthologies by thinking beyond chronological methods and moving instead into more thematic based perspectives of the Harlem Renaissance. An important aspect of our organizational methods is a focus on previously unexplored themes from the movement such as: queer identity, issues of womanhood and music as literature. Also included in our project are the more traditional texts of the movement which continue to be relevant in any discussion involving this pivotal moment in American culture.
The primary aim of this project has been to create a useful and dynamic tool for students, educators and anyone interested in exploring the Harlem Renaissance.
